Futures Bets Defined
Future Bets – A wager made on an event or thing that is not in the near future but a long time off.
A futures bet is a bet thats made on something, such as an event or a championship, that is not in the immediate future. For example betting on who will win the next world series. These bets usually have higher payoffs than bets made during the season or event and with good reason, it is much more difficult to “pick the winner.”
Examples of Futures Bets
- Winner of the Super Bowl
- Winner of the AFC Championship
- Winner of the NFC Championship
- MLB team will win the World Series
- Win the NBA Championship
- Win the Stanley Cup
- Win the US Open
Futures Odds; How to Read Odds
Calculations are based on $100.
There is a Favorite and an Underdog and odds are determined by most likely outcome.
-150 means you need to bet $150, to win $100;
+750 means you need to bet $100, to win $750
Pros of Futures Bets
Futures bets have a higher payout than other bets because they are harder to predict. Who knows what will happen during a season. Injuries weather staff changes, these all effect how well a team does.
These bets are really good for keeping the better interested in a sport throughout an entire season. Rather than just being interested in the outcome of just one match or game, you are interested in the entire series of games. They are the “value for the buck” bet.
Many times you can hedge your bets by making addition bets when you have more information. By making wise secondary bets you can lessen your risk of losing large sums.
Cons of Futures Bets
It’s hard to predict who will win. Who knows what will happen during a season. Injuries, weather, staff changes, acts of god, these all effect how well a team does. Even if the payout is higher, you still lose, if you don’t win. So you might have to come up with some more money to hedge your bet. Also sportsbooks tend to juice these bets, you know, have a high vig from them.
