NJ Online Sports Betting History

New Jersey politics have always been… different. Look at Bridgegate, The George Washington Bridge lane closure scandal and all the other problems it has had. But this time the garden state and then Governor Chris Christie did something amazing, they legalized online sports betting.  NJ seems to be one of the most appropriate states to take the reins, seeing that sport betting in Atlantic City was just a natural evolution but it wasn’t all just sunshine and butterflies. The Garden State had to fight tooth and nail to be the trailblazers for sports betting online.

Legal online gambling was approved by The New Jersey Assembly and Senate way back in 2013 when they passed bill A2578, written by Sen. Ray Lesniak to stimulate the failing Atlantic City’s economy. The last version of the bill was sponsored by 3 leaders John J Burzichelli, Vincent Prieto and Ruben J Ramos and passed the Assembly 68-5, and then through the Senate 35-1. So there was overwhelming support for it and Governor Chris Christie finally signed it into law. This bill made it legal to wager on online sports betting sites, from within New Jersey. So why haven’t we heard about it until now? Why the 6 year delay? If it legal now, why not before?

There was a dinosaur law from the Bush era called the Professional And Amateur Sports Protection Act – PASPA, that prohibited it. Do you remember Pete Rose? The PASPA law was approved following the aftermath of that scandal, though it seems the fall of it will not clear Pete. This law supersede the newly passed NJ state law.

When the NJ state government legalized online gambling the National Football League (NFL), National Basketball Association (NBA), Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Hockey League (NHL), NASCAR and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tried to stop New Jersey’s sports betting industry, by filing a lawsuit, jointly. The government lost but modified the bill and appealed from higher court to higher court. Long story short, in December of 2017 the case went before the United States Supreme Court.

The landmark decision handed down by the SCOTUS, ruled in favor of New Jersey in May of 2018 and declared PASPA unconstitutional, thus clearing the road to legalized sports betting for New Jersey and any other state that votes to regulate it.  So yes, it is legal to place online sports wagers in NJ and other states but each state as always has its own laws but when big revenue is involved you can count on them “following suit.”

Now New Jersey is the trailblazer for online sports betting in the United States. Whether you like sports betting, online gambling or online Poker the golden days of virtual gambling are here to stay and we all get front row seats. Will you be the driver or the passenger? Will you be a whale or a little fish? Was is our role? US-Bookie.com guides are  your personal navigator and we are big sharks. Be sure to check out our state by state guilds with the actual requirements, information and all our other content to find the best promotions and bonuses anywhere on the web.

NJ Sports Betting Law: Can You Win Real Money?

So can I be sitting on my couch, getting ready for the Boston Red Sox vs. The New York Yankees or the New England Patriots vs the Dallas Cowboys, go online or to my mobile app and place a wager and win real money? Well YES, and NO.

As with everything there are requirements and restrictions.

Below you will find the major requirements and a brief explanation. Be sure to check you own states laws and regulations when it comes to online gambling, betting or wagering as the laws change and we do not give legal advice.

Only Players 21 Years of Age and Older Can Bet on Sports Online

Federal law prohibits gambling for real money under the age of 21. You must confirm your age when you log onto the website to protect the integrity of the games. The information you may be asked to provide your name, address, Social Security number and other personal information. After you pass the security protocols and confirm your age is at least 21 years of age or older you can play.

Why Do You Need to Give Your SS Number?

This comes from the Patriot Act and the Bank Secrecy Act. Casinos are financial institutions and they must adhere to the government regulations. Casinos are subject to the same anti-money laundering laws as any financial institutions. They must keep records of a person’s name, permanent address, and Social Security number whenever there is a new account opened or new deposit made.   Is my information safe?

Casinos which run online gambling sites are licensed and regulated as are the third-party companies hired to run player verification checks. This is all under the watchful eye of the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement and all online gaming operators are vetted and licensed by the NJDGE. Your information is as safe with a licensed casino as it is with any bank or financial institution.

NJ Sportsbook Users Required to Be in NJ, GPS Used

Pepper Hamilton L.L.P.’s online-gambling attorney Jeremy Frey said, “You log onto a website operated and owned by any of the Atlantic City casinos. You can begin play after GPS technology confirms that you are located in New Jersey at the time you are gambling.”

GeoComply is the company which provides the technology and support for the geolocation services. The technology works as a fence and anyone located within the state who meets the other requirements, are  permitted to wager. The location service process usually happens in the background and mobile app use your phone’s in-built Location Services. You may be required to install a plugin if you are using a desktop computer.

The possibilities are virtually limitless, you can play now online at, let’s say Newark Airport, EWR, during a long layover or passengers on a bus can play while driving down Interstate 95 on the way to Florida.

How do I uninstall the GeoComply plugin?

Windows:

  1. Click the Start Menu > Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs and Features.
  3. If your Control Panel is in Category view, go to uninstall a Program.
  4. Click on the program titled ‘Player Location Check’, and click Uninstall.

Mac:

  1. Close all active applications and go to your Applications Folder.
  2. Find the GeoComply plugin, known as Player Location Check, and drag it into the Trash.
  3. Right-click on the Trash and select Empty Trash.

Players Are Not Required to Be a NJ Resident

Thought you do not need to be a legal resident of NJ or even an American for that matter you are still required to have a SS number for verification purposes. Any one who has a SS number and meets the other requirements may make wagers online. So again, not only New Jersey residents can bet on online sports but anyone within the borders. This means anyone, including foreigners who have a social security number, can now play.

Land-Based NJ Casino or Racetrack

All Site or App Must Operate through a Land-Based NJ Casino Licensee. You can find a comprehensive list of licensees here. Some of the land based casinos or racetracks may have more than one site. That doesn’t mean the sites are the same because the software, pricing, trading, and risk management are from different providers. That being said some different providers run more than one site. Take Kambi Sports it provides for 888sport SugarHouse and DraftKings, so there are many similarities between their sites.

Online Play May Give You Comps

As with any other industry, the gambling industry is full of competition.  NJ casinos give you comps through their mobile sports betting apps or online sportsbook. These comps can be used for many things from show tickets to hotel rooms to dinner and more. Of course it is good marketing! Get them into your corresponding brick and mortar casino and they will be much more likely to return, use your app or spend more money

15% tax on online gambling revenue

NJ takes a pretty big chunk of change from online gambling. Instead of the normal 8%  imposed on casinos sports betting has a 15% tax rate. Originally the tax rate was supposed to be 10% but raised to 15% get support, to pass the bill through The New Jersey Assembly and Senate. The idea was to promote the actual land based casino.

NJ Casino Licensee with Internet Gaming Permits

Sports betting is now 100% legal from the US Federal government level, to the State level, to the local level and even to your mama’s level. It is legal and we are here to help make your experience a fun, responsible and let’s face it, hopefully a profitable one.  Here we have information about the NJ Casinos which can legally have online sports betting.

So the first thing that we must understand is that online gambling, online poker and casino games are in a different category than online sports betting and online fantasy betting. So we must speak about them separately though a lot of the law and rules overlap. So if you are a diehard NHL New Jersey Devils fan, an NFL Giants or NBA Nets fan, you can now bet on your local teams online.

All Sports Betting Site Must Operate Through a Licensed NJ Land-based Casino or Racetrack

NJ online sports betting law says that all sportsbooks which have online sports betting apps or online sports betting site must have a licensed NJ land-based casino or race track and if you have seen “Boardwalk Empire” you know they are based in Atlantic City. Likewise legal online gambling poker apps and site and online gambling sites for real money must also do the same.

Before an operator can start advertising a New Jersey licensed online gaming sites, they have to get an affiliate license from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. Operators are paid by their online betting site and brick and mortar casinos, such as those in Atlantic City Casinos and NJ Racetracks. This is how the flow of profits goes. The players also can win real cash money! The more you know about how the system works and which sites are offering the best promotions and comps, the better off you are. That’s where we come in. You can find loads of useful and crucial information and updates here on US-Bookie.com along with guides, Promo codes and our rankings.

These are the land based sites which are authorized to have a 3rd party affiliate run an online gambling site according to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. This list is subject to change at any time. If  you have a question about the legality of a specific online casino operating in NJ please feel free to contact the DGE: (609) 9840909/ igaming@njdge.org.

So these land-based casinos and race tracks with internet gaming permits are allowed to contract licensed affiliates. These affiliates can have two kinds of licenses based upon the type  of compensation model agreed upon between them and the casino or racetrack. There are 1. vendors registration license or  2. ancillary casino service industry enterprises.

Vendor registration licenced 3rd parties get paid a flat fee depending on the actions of the user. These could be Cost per Click, there the affiliate gets paid when a player clicks on a link.  Cost per Impression, how many people they think will go on the site or cost per view, how many people actually go on the site. It might also be a sponsorship deal with let’s say the New York Yakees or the Dallas Cowboys or cost per action, if the user deposits money, signs up, downloads something or bets.

Ancillary CSIE registration licensed 3rd parties get paid a percentage depending on player action (how much the user wagers). This could be a revenue or profit share, a slice of the whole pie, a percentage of the net profits. It could be Cost Per Action, CPA, which is an agreed upon percentage of deposited money, or betting fees, or it could be a mix of both. The Ancillary licence is much harder to obtain and is more strictly controlled.

Resorts Casino Sportsbook is from Resorts, the first casino hotel in Atlantic City. It was the first legal casino outside of Nevada in the United States, when it opened, in 1978. Borgata

Borgata is owned and operated by MGM Resorts International.
