There are currently 16 online sportsbooks in New Jersey, and new ones starting up all the time. Sportsbooks offer many, many different types of bonus and promos to motivate you to play with them. Not all that glitters is gold, knowing the difference between a promo real value vs one with no weight, is what we do. There are two kinds of bonuses: sign-up bonuses, which apply to your first deposit or initial bets, and ongoing bonuses, which apply all the time and are refreshed periodically.
Types of Bonuses and Promo
Every bonus and promo is different and are regulated strictly by a set of rules, regulations and policies set up by the sportsbook. We have listed some of the most common types you are going to encounter as you explore the different sportsbooks. Please keep in mind that these are the general and there will be variations and conditions on each that might affect them. Here is the overview.
Sign-Up Bonuses, Initial Deposit Bonus, Deposit Match Bonus
By far this is the most common type of bonus that sportsbooks offer. Of course it is how they are trying to get “eyeballs” on their site and get you to know how awesome their product is. Many of these initial bonuses are not withdrawable but you can withdraw the winnings, if any. Some require you to “rollover” the credits. for example you might need to place a bet 6 times at -200 odds on a moneyline wager. As we said they are all different but using this bonus is your best advantage to “beating” the house.
Free Play Bonus, Free Bet Bonus
The sports book will give you another bet when you place the first bet. So, if you make a $100 bet, you will also get a free bet for $100. Each bet is independent of each other. Free Play Bonuses: You only keep the winnings of the bet.
Cash Bonus
Receiving a cash bonus is better than a free play bonus, but these are rare at online sportsbooks. The reason they are more valuable than free plays is because the staked amount and winnings are both returned. Whereas, free plays only return a winning wager and not stake. When possible, chose a cash bonuses over free play or free bets. Cash Bonuses: You keep both the winnings of the bet and the original wager amount.
Match Bet
You’re multiplying your potential payout without changing your risk or the odds. This is why these are offered so rarely by sportsbooks. A 100 % match bonus means a $100 wager will be matched, dollar for dollar, by the online sportsbook. So you get a 2 identical $100 slips. Usually the match stake is considered free play, so you can’t withdraw it. Check the T&C for requirements.
Risk Free Bet
This is an offer that if you place a bet that doesn’t win, you will get your money back. If you win, you don’t lose but you also do not get anything. It’s a bittersweet win.
Enhanced Odds
Enhanced odds means that the odds are made to be better for you. Often you will see the offer enhanced to such an extent that an odds-on favourite goes up to +300 or even +400. There are a lot of ways a bookie can enhance the odds and sometimes it’s on a specific game or even.
Cash Back Incentives
Sites will offer players a percentage of your losses back. This is good, but I only win. Unless I don’t, and then, like we said, this is good.
Reload Bonuses
Available to existing members of the site, personal, I never needed these because I only made the one initial deposit. Since then, I have been picking winners so I’ve just have to withdraw, not deposit. But if your normal, you will have to reload their bankroll from time to time. This bonus will give you a percentage in some form of bonus.
Refer A Friend
Just like a video game, or a membership club, for every person that you refer to a sportsbook, that sportsbook will credit your account with a reward once that person makes their initial deposit. If you want to be my friend, I’m a friendly person.
No Deposit Bonus
Once in a while, a site that allows you to play without actually depositing any funds to the site. These are usually called no deposit bonuses and will usually be for a small denomination like $5, $10 or $20 and the rollover requirement will be much higher than others.
Seasonal Promotions
Tis the season for turkey, pumpkins, red hearts, shamrocks, American flags, summer, winter, fall and the list goes on and on. You name it, the marketing department will use it. Look out for awesome promotions during holidays and the change of weather. These take the form of the multiple types of promotions but may be a little sweeter or with a pinch of love.
Top 5 Tips and Tricks to Avoid Bonus Pitfalls
Ok, these might seem obvious to us and some of the old hands out there but we always still need to do the checklist, to insure we take as much advantage of knowledge as posible. When choosing which sportsbook to play on, take the time to consider how these conditions work together as a whole. We all here that the hole is more than the sum of the parts and its true. For example, a bonus with a higher odds requirement, that you only need to rollover 1 time, might be better than a bonus with lower odds requirement, that you need to rollover 10 times.
1. Read All the T&C carefully
“It’s in there.” Just like the Prego tomato sauce commercial said, if you read the terms and the conditions you will find out exactly what the requirements are for the bonus. Reading them carefully will definitely be beneficial for you to use them correctly, if you don’t you only have yourself to blame. If you don’t understand something, try to do some further research. All the information you need is at your fingertips.
2. Avoid Huge Rollover Requirements
Rollover rates vary from site to site but a good sportsbook will have a number like 6x or less. However a site could make it as high as 30x. This means that you’d have to gamble a lot of money at the site before the bonus funds are yours. Everytime you rollover there is chances that your going to lose. The less rollovers you have the better.
3. Avoid Crazy Bet Odds
Sites always state what the minimum odds for bonus bets is. Usually it is a fare minimum because if not, players would place bets on ‘sure thing’ bets to get all that bonus money, and the sportsbooks would be at a huge disadvantage and lose a lot. Normal odds are between -150 and -250 but you need to consider this in combination with the amount of rollovers and other factors.
4. Avoid Unreasonable Short Time Limits on Bonuses
All these bonuses have time limits, as you can expect, but sometime they are really short, like 2 or 3 days. If you consider this in conjunction-junction with a high rollover requirement, it might be hard to do. If you plan to play intensely then maybe it’s ok but some people only bet on their teams, once a week, on Sundays. A 30 day or 60 day expiration time is quite normal.
5. Avoid Promotions That Are for Wagering Purposes Only
This means you are just playing the site as it were a video game and you will never receive any real world money from this. We like winning real money when we win, not a high score. This is usually how a non-legal sportsbook or a sportsbook testing a new platform, gets free data and feedback.
